~~Apagoue Road~~

Leading my way were the stars that lite the sky there were no people walking this road from town to that forgotton mansion . A road I had learned to love an often would run just as fast as a young light hearted mans feet would carry him. In darkest winter nights there was one light lite that remained lite for that young man,who had found a refuge . A home for three kindred spirits; I remain only missing the others more each day.
There is no doubt that all those who now find what I’ve cherished all these years also make my heart ache for stars that led me once long ago.

  1. The Stars over Apogue Road. I can almost see them now in a dark but clear moonless sky. All the constellations so brilliantly laid out over head….. and it seems the more you look the more you see! You know Jerry the most amazing thing of all is NOT where those stars have LED you but even more so where they are GOING to lead you in days yet to be lived!

The wonderful memories you have are so rich and must be such a treasure in your heart, not just sweet but some kind of sad almost melancholy. But look at the incredible joy that those memories have brought to countless souls!

I can only imagine the great things yet to unfold in front of you. Thanks for taking us down Apogue Road with you, Its almost as if we were actually there ourselves!

  2. Hi Jerry,
I know Apaqoue road must mean so much to you.
Is that why you named one of your pieces Apaqoue?

  3. Jerry,

To hear one souls voice, helps to lead you to the right path. A soft lit dim light that to you was brighter then any other light around you. The light of hope, and faith resonated in your soul. Even at a young age you had excised your mind, a tool to tap into the spirit side.
    Bravo! To Your Soul!

Imagine all those who came before we,the passing of time , that has led to this moment.
It is inherited , passed through time itself, only each generations has only to follow.
Ive been visiting The Metropolitan Museaum of Art a great deal.
There is a fresco of a soul that beckons,he lived centuries ago yet I somehow recall moments from his expression.
Is his expression one that I today can relate to yes, it is also a clue to a very distant past without a doubt.

  4. Wow Jerry. Apaqoue road is a good two miles from 27 to the Mansion. As it is frightfully cold here in NY I have often thought of the Edies these last several winter nights. I can’t imagine how they endured the cold through so many winters…and so close the water. Such a blessing in warmer weather but a curse for all living in a home which, I believe, must have had many openings to invite drafts. I do recall LE , (in the documentary) lamenting the winter and vowing not to stay through another.

Jerry, I’m sure that you being there was a great help to these two women. And to run Apaqoue in winter – you had to be in top shape.

    Best,

    • Morning Sandush,
When the fall begins so do the memories of a winter on the horizon. The Centre bedroom was the safeest room in the mansion ,the electricity was basically reliable. There was only one window and it was sound. With a smaller room in which to heat and access to the bathroom it was the best we could do,the centre bedroom was all we had as far as a comfortable room. Winter would set in then the real struggle beagn.
Winds from the Sea would whip for days,it took so much strenght emotionally and physically to endure the endless nights.
There were days when the phone just did not ring, isolation was moving in and we knew it would last for months.
Thankfully I still can run like mad, I run 6 miles each morning to this very morning.
      Health is wealth.

  5. Jerry,
First off, I would like to start by saying congratulations on the launch of such a wonderful page! I’m always so very interested in anything connected with Grey Gardens. Also, thank you for sharing your experiences that you encountered with two wonderful individuals. As evidence in the documentary, you brought just as much love to their lives, as they brought to yours. I look forward to reading more as often as possible. Thanks again.

    • Hi Joey Hair ,
      Good Morning to you!
After the initail wave of excitment subsided it became appararent to me that there was a friendship we all shared at Grey Gardens.
The condition of the mansion was so untouched that I was torn between distrurbing the trappings of time and making it habitable.
Here on this site one of three projects ,communicating showing my sculptures, and embracing ever so clumsily the internet.,”We’re in this world you know”
It has been 35 years or better and now so many have also been touched bt the lives of Mrs.Beale and Edie, isn`t that terrific!
      regards
      Jerry
