~~New York Historical Society~~

SDC11273

New York has many museums, after all the time that had passed I made this one museum a priority. My Professor had suggested I visit the NY Historical Society. It is located on Central Park West & 77 Th St, opposite The American Museum of Natural History.

It may I add has the finest collection of marble sculpture, this American Indian is one example of the collection.   In this stone sculpture I’m fascinated with the realism, in both size of an actually Indian, yet beyond the figure is the contemplation in the pose that tells me of a time, that was, and in my opinion still exists.

Until all men are free, we are all captive .

I’ve always held our American Natives to be gifted, soulful, and some how almost forgotten.

I bow in respect to the artist who had expressed in stone, such a tale of so great a people.

  1. Jerry.
I am so glad that you are enjoying the NYHS! I love it there!
The Historical Society also has an original edition of Audubon’s NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS, as well as 435 dazzling preparatory watercolors for John James Audubon’s The Birds of America (1827-38). The watercolors, kept in a dark vault, are brought out for show only for 10 days every 5 years because Mr. Audubon was a self educated artist who used what-ever materials (ground up plant matter, scrapings from an uncle’s gold ring) were available to create the effect he desired. He knew nothing about pigment stability or the effects of light and air on media. His work began to fade almost immediately! I would love to Museum hop with you someday!

  2. Didn’t Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis have something to do with with obtaining the Egyptian Temple? It was so nice to walk into that room after leaving 100° weather outside…

  4. This sculpture is extraordinary. I cannot hardly take my eyes off the left arm, so real and perfect. Wow! (And no, I don’t have a left arm fetish! (;^)

  5. Jerry, Maybe some day one of your piece’s will be at the New York Historical Society.

    • Yes, Ted. You are right on two counts! Jerry is an important NY historical artifact himself as well as a fabulous sculptor whose work would beautifully light up any hall at the NYHS!
I think RUINS would look great in the entry hall!

  6. Thank you for mentioning this Jerry. We try to go to NY a few times a year and have never knew of this museum.

    • Paul T,
The museaum is located at West 77 Th & Central Park West. The A train , local , stops at West 81 St, just north one block of The Museum of Natural History. You can walk south along the park to West 77Th St.The New York Historical Museaum, has a treasure trove of history. I was fascinated on the library which has the most complete collection of all things about *Abraham Lincoln.

If I may sugest during a vist , ”The Metropolitan Museum of Art”~ located on ~5Th Ave,& East 81 St~. Upon entering this museaum you may find on the first floor, two outstanding permant exhibits. On the *right side of the museaum the *North side is ~The Temple of Dendur ~. A excavation of an Egyptian Temple, stands , under a glass cieling. ,it was saved from the rising water, of the Aswan Dam in Egypt.
On the opposite side the *left side, southern end is* The Greek & Roman permanant exhibit. It is simply wonderful.
Please send my warmest regards to all those whom you hold dear, your pal,
      Jerry
