It has been some years since Al Maysle’s & his brother David approached us on the front porch of Mrs. Beale’s mansion I can’t believe it has been thirty some years ago since we released Grey Garden.

Hi Jerry! I just discovered your site and am so excited. I will be “hanging on to every word” you write. What a joy to know after all these years you are still “out there” and have turned into such an amazing man with such a potent voice! As everyone else has said, I am so grateful for your willingness to share with us. And you are writing a book!?! Too good to be true. When? Can’t wait. By the way, I have everything having to do with the 2 Edies. Their story, and yours, has enriched my life in marvelous ways. And you are still here! I have to admit I liked the savage tranquility of the overgrown Grey Gardens better, but nothing stays the same that long (except maybe your voice!!)
Here’s to Mrs. Beale and Edie (and you, too, Jerry)
It is so fascinating to watch you walking up the SAME drive way all these years later!
Reminiscing about the way things WERE so vividly in YOUR mind and yet everything has changed!
And yet in some paralell universe of Grey Gardens everything remains the same forever!
I think the Maysles didn’t realize at the time (nor I’m sure did YOU) that as famous as some of their work would become that GREY GARDENS would undoubtedly become not only their MOST famous but most ENDURING labour of love! I doubt that ANY of their other works see the kind of staying power as Grey Gardens. It was like the “PERFECT STORM” all the forces just so wonderfully coincided there! INTERSTING PEOPLE IN AN INTERESTING SITUATION IN AN INTERESTING TIME!
And all these years later people all over the world enjoy the story, the character of the two Beales as well as YOUR character, all of it immortalized in film, literature , theatre and song! Jerry what an incredible place in history they have AND YOU have as well!
The three of you just belonged together THEN and now YOU are left to carry the torch! Bittersweet!
Thanks again and again Jer for not shutting us OUT of Grey Gardens but for BRINGING US *IN* through your memories and generosity of spirit! You’re in this world you know and we thank God FOR that! Thanks Jerry! People love you! Amazing!
Jerry, Thank you for your reply. I eagerly watched this video of you approaching the house, but was dissappointed that it ended so abruptly. I gather you were not permitted to video tape beyond a certain point. What was the occasion that brought you there, as it appears other guests were there and entering the front porch? I am sure you were given a tour of the house sometime after the restoration and would love to have been a bird on your shoulder. I can only guess what your reaction and emotions must have been. God bless the Bradlees for their interest in salvaging the house and bringing it back to its glory. Edith and Edie must be so grateful and pleased!!!

Thanks for sharing this video. I enjoyed hearing that the first day you went there, you only went up to the car; and the second day, you ventured to the porch. This is the stuff I love to hear! Hope you put it all in your book.
