~~The Mansion at Grey Gardens~~
That summer afternoon the surf was rough, leaving swimming out of the question.I had finished my chores at Mr. Geddes estate, returned the riding lawn mower to the gardeners shed. It was for all accounts a splendid afternoon, little did I know that a decision to ride my bicycle down a country road I had yet to explore., was about to change my life forever.
My blue pugeot ten speed bicycle was my pride and joy, I kept it so that the spokes would reflect the sun bright and carefree. Then the road began to narrow, the privet hedge was now feet tall, as tall as any tree nearby. My first sense was that of a coolness from the great shade of privet some 30 feet in height. It was customary for me to ride hands free, sitting well balanced on my ten speed.
My balance was lost my footing as well, my sneaker was lodged between the pavement and the bicycle pedal,it was my first glance at the peaks of this mansion.Struggling to regain my balance , my only thought was to regain my posture and try to understand what I have just discovered.
It was vintage Grey Gardens, just exactly as this photo shows. If you look carefully you will see a person sitting on a lawn chair,it is Mrs .Beale .

Jerry, you’re the only blog I read!!!! I do, also, hang on every word you share about that time at Grey Gardens. Was that Big or Little Edie in the chair? You bring it to life in a way no one else can.
Dearest Julie in Atlanta, dear friend Roger, good afternooon Traci, Shirley, thank you all for being here!
During the time before the great raid,it was requested to me by Mrs.Beale that she would like to sit out side the mansion.
This is the only time in the years we shared that Mrs.Beale would go out doors, and set her feet in the grass.
Dear Grey Gardeners, In all the years i have lived , with the magic, the wonder of such a mystery, it is my profound duty to share , what I haave loved in 35 or so years of silence.
Ive been writing a detailed walk through the mansion, exactly as i found it, shadows of cobwebs, shading the windows, locking time out.
Ive been just as fascinated yes, after all these years, welcome dear friends, yours,Jerry
I love everything—and anything—you say about Grey Gardens.
I just finished reading Lois Wright’s book My Life at Grey Gardens, and I was wondering, Jerry, if you keep in contact with her…Her book was fascinating!
Hauntingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Wow. To have experienced what you have, and to be able to share it with all of us. What a story. I hope that you will continue to give us these tidbits. Thank you so much, Jerry.
